In a sensational incident off the coasts of Chilean Patagonia, a young kayaker was accidentally swallowed by a humpback whale.
Adrián Simancas, a 23-year-old enthusiast, was paddling along the Strait of Magellan with his father when he encountered an absolutely unique experience. Without realizing what was unfolding, he found himself trapped inside the massive aquatic creature’s mouth.
What was his first sensation? An unfamiliar, viscous texture, enveloped in total darkness. Although it happened swiftly, to him, it felt like an endless, terrifying moment. His father, who was nearby, captured the whole scene, recording a moment rarely witnessed worldwide.
“I Felt a Sticky Substance, Then Realized I Was in a Whale’s Mouth”
Adrián described how everything happened suddenly. He was enjoying a peaceful kayak ride when he felt a strong motion from behind. Before he knew what was happening, he found himself swallowed.
“Initially, I had no idea where I was. But I could feel I was in a tight, wet space with a sticky substance all around,” he told BBC Mundo.
In those panic-stricken moments, his thoughts drifted to the story of Pinocchio, the little wooden boy trapped by a whale.
“I wondered how I could survive. I had no way of knowing if I would be fully swallowed or if the whale would spit me out,” Adrián recounted. Luckily, after a few moments, the whale released him, allowing Adrián to safely surface.
His Father Caught Everything on Camera
From a kayak nearby, his father, Dall Simancas, watched the scene unfold in fear.
“When I looked back, Adrián was gone. I was scared for a few moments, but then I saw him surface,” Dall described.
Using the camera mounted on his kayak, he recorded the incredible moment his son was swallowed and then released by the whale.
Upon reviewing the footage, Adrián was amazed by the whale’s impressive size.
“I didn’t realize how enormous it was until I saw the footage. Had I known how big it was before it struck me, I think I would’ve been even more terrified,” he admitted.
Why Was Adrián Released? Experts Weigh In
Experts say this is extremely rare and that the humpback whale didn’t intend to swallow Adrián. Marine biologist Roched Jacobson Seba explained that these creatures have a very narrow throat, suited only for small fish and shrimp.
“Physically, a humpback whale can’t swallow large things like kayaks or humans. It seems that while feeding on a school of fish, the whale accidentally sucked in Adrián’s kayak,” the expert explained.
Seba also warns that such situations can be avoided if those engaging in water sports pay closer attention to their surroundings, especially in areas where whales are present.
“Whale watching boats should keep their engines running, as the noise helps whales detect human presence and steer clear,” he suggested.
An Adventure That Transformed His Life
For Adrián, the experience was more than just a dangerous occurrence. He said it made him appreciate life more deeply.
“I feel blessed with a second chance. It was an experience that led me to reflect on what truly matters in life,” he expressed.
Even though his encounter with the whale was shocking, Adrián and his father remain passionate about kayaking. However, they vow to be more cautious on future water adventures.
