Regifted Cactus Reveals Unwanted Surprise

A coworker gave me a plastic cactus figurine as a regift, but when I accidentally knocked it over one night, I discovered a hidden spy camera inside. It felt like an odd metaphor for a situation I’d been dealing with for a while—a friend group full of manipulative tactics and poor boundaries.

Take the time Susan, Greg, and I went out for dinner. They ordered a lavish $200 meal, while I just had a $4 drink. When the bill came, Greg suggested splitting it among six people, even though only three of us had eaten. I pointed out that it should be divided among those who actually ordered food, but Dan was stuck with a hefty $146.98 tab, despite only eating about $50 worth.

I was so frustrated that I left a $10 tip and walked out. The next day, Susan and Greg texted me, calling me an “AH” for not ordering food, while Dan complained that I caused him trouble. I tried to explain that he could’ve asked them to pay, but he kept enabling their behavior, making it harder for me to address the issue.

While I know my actions may seem petty, I was just fed up with constantly being stuck with the fallout from their decisions. Friendships, to me, should be based on mutual respect and fairness. By standing up for myself this time, I hoped to shift the dynamic and encourage more responsible and equitable behavior moving forward.
