When my sister Susan invited us for a “relaxed” afternoon by her pool, I hoped it might feel like the carefree family gatherings we used to have. My eight-year-old daughter Lily, a natural swimmer, was thrilled. But ever since Susan married Cooper, her events had become more about image than connection, with carefully curated guests and picture-perfect settings.
The party was filled mostly with Susan’s new friends, and Lily quickly asked to swim.
