Golden Age actress died penniless after suffering horrific injury and battling addiction

Posted on February 2, 2026

A Hollywood actress tragically passed away destitute despite ascending to stardom during cinema’s golden era.

Although she made her Broadway debut at merely 19 and entered the film industry, following her renowned actor parents’ legacy, a devastating accident would ultimately derail Gladys George’s career.

Born into a theatrical family, Gladys was only three when she performed alongside her parents in a vaudeville production called The Three Clares. In 1919, she secured a lead role in Red Hot Dollars opposite Thomas Ince.

Her acting career extended through the 1950s, with appearances in productions including The Maltese Falcon, Madame X, and The Roaring Twenties.

Devastatingly, her burgeoning film career faced jeopardy in 1921, when she suffered serious burns in a horrific fire. Following the incident, she retreated from Hollywood and returned to intimate theatrical productions, marrying actor Ben Enway the following year.

The relationship proved short-lived, and in 193,4 Gladys wed manufacturer Edward Fowler, who financially supported her professional ambitions, enabling her to secure a contract with MGM.

That union lasted just one year before she remarried, this time to actor Leonard Penn.

Her fourth and final marriage was to Kenneth Bradley from 1946 until 1950, when that too ended in divorce.

During her final years, Gladys struggled with alcohol dependency and heavy tobacco use. She received a heart disease diagnosis and ultimately succumbed to a cerebral hemorrhage in 1954 in Los Angeles.

Reports also circulated that Gladys was a penniless recluse at the time of her death.

Admirers hailed her as an “incredible” actress, with one IMDb reviewer noting: “Gladys George wound up in supporting roles shortly after [Madame X]. George is magnificent as Jacqueline. A beautiful woman and a great actress, she certainly showed in this film what she was capable of.”

Another commented: “Gladys George is a sadly neglected actress who worked steadily for her short life. Her gravelly voice was unique, and what skills as an actress!”
