Grey’s Anatomy Star Passed Away At 53

Posted on February 23, 2026

Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, PEOPLE confirms.

The actor, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan — affectionately dubbed “McSteamy” — on Grey’s Anatomy, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 19, according to a statement from his family.

Dane’s death comes 10 months after he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” per the statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Eric Dane (born Nov. 9, 1972) was an American actor best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan — nicknamed “McSteamy” — on the hit ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. His portrayal of the confident yet complex plastic surgeon made him a breakout star and fan favorite during his time on the long-running series.

Born in San Francisco, California, Dane began his acting career in the 1990s with guest roles on television shows including Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years and Married… with Children. He later landed recurring parts on series such as Charmed before joining Grey’s Anatomy in 2006. His character quickly became central to the show’s storylines, particularly through high-profile romances and dramatic arcs.

After departing the series in 2012, Dane expanded his film and television work. He appeared in movies such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque. In recent years, he introduced himself to a new generation of viewers as Cal Jacobs, the troubled patriarch on HBO’s Euphoria, earning praise for his darker, more nuanced performance.

Off-screen, Dane was open about personal challenges, including struggles with addiction and mental health. In 2025, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Dane was previously married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he shared two daughters. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his charisma, commanding screen presence and ability to balance charm with emotional depth.
