Julia Roberts became famous because of her underarms.

Posted on April 21, 2026

Julia Roberts has spoken about a surprising moment in her career when she almost rejected one of the most defining roles in modern romantic comedy history. The role would later become her performance in Notting Hill, but at the time it was first presented to her, she did not see its potential and reacted very negatively to the idea.

When she first heard the concept, the reaction was instinctive rather than analytical. The story of a world-famous actress falling in love with a quiet, ordinary bookstore owner in London felt unrealistic and overly constructed. In her mind, it sounded like a fantasy built on an unlikely premise rather than a believable emotional journey. She admitted that her immediate response was blunt and dismissive, even describing the idea in strong language that reflected her surprise and skepticism.

At that point in her career, Roberts was already a major Hollywood figure, and she was constantly being offered scripts with similar romantic or celebrity-centered themes. Because of that, she had developed a kind of instinct to quickly judge whether a project felt authentic or repetitive. In this case, her first impression led her to believe the film would not work.

However, the situation changed when she later revisited the script more carefully. Instead of focusing only on the surface-level premise, she read it in full from beginning to end. This time, she paid closer attention to the tone, the dialogue, and the emotional structure of the story. Slowly, her opinion began to shift.

What initially felt unrealistic started to feel intentionally stylized rather than shallow. She noticed that the film was not trying to present a literal real-world scenario, but rather a romantic fantasy grounded in emotional truth. The characters were written with warmth, humor, and vulnerability, and the story was more about human connection than celebrity culture.

As she continued reading, she found herself responding more positively to the relationship between the two main characters. The contrast between fame and normal life, which had first seemed like a gimmick, began to feel like a meaningful exploration of loneliness, public identity, and the desire to be seen as a person rather than a public image.

Despite this shift in perspective, deciding whether to accept the role was not immediate. Roberts considered the risks carefully. Saying yes would mean committing to a romantic comedy that could either become a classic or fail as a predictable Hollywood experiment. At the same time, rejecting it meant possibly avoiding another project that would not stand out in her career.

She reflected on her previous experiences in the industry, where initial impressions had sometimes been misleading. She had seen projects that looked simple on paper become unexpectedly successful, while others that seemed promising failed to connect with audiences. This uncertainty made her hesitate, but also encouraged her not to rely solely on her first reaction.

Eventually, she decided to accept the role. The production process that followed confirmed that decision. The atmosphere on set was reportedly light, collaborative, and focused on character chemistry rather than spectacle. The chemistry between the leads became one of the film’s strongest elements, and it translated directly into the final result.

When Notting Hill was released, it exceeded expectations and became one of the most recognizable romantic comedies of its era. Audiences responded strongly to its blend of humor, emotional honesty, and escapist charm. Over time, the film achieved a kind of cultural longevity that few romantic comedies reach, continuing to be widely watched and referenced years after its release.

Looking back, Roberts has acknowledged that her first reaction to the script was completely wrong. What she initially dismissed as a “stupid” idea turned out to be a carefully crafted story that resonated with millions of viewers. She has reflected on how easy it is in the entertainment industry to misjudge a project based on an initial impression, especially when the concept sounds unusual or unconventional.

The experience became a reminder for her that first reactions are not always reliable indicators of quality. Sometimes, a story needs to be understood in full before its emotional depth becomes visible. In this case, what started as hesitation turned into one of the most important and successful decisions of her career.

Today, the role remains one of her most iconic performances, and Notting Hill continues to be associated closely with her legacy in romantic comedy. What could have been a missed opportunity instead became a defining moment, all because she chose to look again after her initial judgment.
