Acclaimed British actor David Burke has died at the age of 91. His agent, Scott Marshall Partners, confirmed on Friday that Burke passed away on May 10.
He is survived by his wife, actress Anna Calder-Marshall, and their son, Tom Burke, best known for starring in the BBC crime drama adaptation of Cormoran Strike series.
A Distinguished Career Across Stage and Screen
Trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Burke built a remarkable career spanning theatre, television, and radio.
He appeared in a stage production of King Lear at the National Theatre alongside Ian Holm. His television credits also included appearances in Midsomer Murders and The Woodlanders with Felicity Kendal.
Remembered as Dr Watson
Burke became widely recognised in the 1980s for playing Dr Watson in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes opposite Jeremy Brett in the title role.
His warm and intelligent portrayal of Sherlock Holmes’ trusted companion earned him lasting admiration from fans of the classic detective series.
Family Came Before Fame
According to reports in The Times, Burke chose not to return for the second series of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes because he felt guilty spending long periods away from his family during filming in Manchester.
His son Tom later revealed that he once worried his father had sacrificed a major career opportunity for him. However, David reassured him, saying:
“It was my decision. I didn’t just want to work; I also wanted to be your dad.”
He added humorously:
“On top of that, I was getting bored of saying, ‘Good heavens, Holmes.’”
A Family of Actors
Tom Burke has since built a successful acting career of his own, starring in The Musketeers and portraying detective Cormoran Strike in Strike.
More recently, he appeared alongside Steve Coogan in the Netflix series Legends, which premiered earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Anna Calder-Marshall is also known for roles in Grantchester, This England, and the Netflix series Bodies.
