Ann Blyth, Oscar-Nominated ‘Mildred Pierce’ Star, Dies at 98

Posted on June 27, 2026

Veteran Hollywood actress Ann Blyth, best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Mildred Pierce, has died at the age of 98.

According to reports, Blyth passed away peacefully from natural causes on Wednesday, just weeks before what would have been her 99th birthday. She was born on August 16, 1927, in Mount Kisco, New York.

Blyth’s career began at an early age, performing on children’s radio shows when she was just six years old. She later made her Broadway debut in Lillian Hellman’s Watch on the Rhine in 1941. While touring the production in Los Angeles, she caught the attention of Universal Studios and signed a film contract.

Her big-screen debut came in the 1944 musical Chip Off the Old Block, but it was her breakthrough role as Veda Pierce in the 1945 classic Mildred Pierce that made her a star. Starring opposite Joan Crawford, Blyth portrayed the ambitious and manipulative daughter of Crawford’s character, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress at just 16 years old.

Following her acclaimed performance, Blyth appeared in a string of successful films throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, including Killer McCoy, Brute Force, Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, Our Very Own, and The Great Caruso.

Her career extended beyond film into television, where she made guest appearances in popular series such as Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, Quincy, M.E., and Murder, She Wrote. She also enjoyed a successful stage career, starring in productions of The King and I, The Sound of Music, and Show Boat.

As one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Blyth built a remarkable career spanning radio, theatre, film, and television over several decades.

She is survived by her five children from her marriage to the late Dr. James McNulty, as well as 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ann Blyth’s legacy as one of classic Hollywood’s most accomplished actresses will continue to be remembered by generations of film lovers.
