Jurassic Park Star Dies at 78

Posted on July 14, 2026

Sir Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor best known for his unforgettable portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed that he passed away suddenly in Sydney, Australia, while surrounded by his loved ones.

Neill became a global star with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic Jurassic Park, where his performance as the intelligent and courageous paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant captivated audiences worldwide. He later reprised the iconic role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), cementing his place as one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Sam Neill enjoyed a remarkable acting career spanning more than five decades. Beyond Jurassic Park, he earned widespread acclaim for his performances in The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, The Tudors, and Peaky Blinders. His versatility allowed him to excel in both major Hollywood productions and critically acclaimed independent films.

In 2023, Neill publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. Earlier this year, he announced that he was cancer-free following an innovative CAR T-cell therapy treatment. His family said his passing was “sudden and unexpected,” noting that he remained free of cancer at the time of his death.

Following the announcement, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry. Director Steven Spielberg, actress Nicole Kidman, actor Cillian Murphy, and many other colleagues praised Neill’s extraordinary talent, warmth, generosity, and enduring impact on cinema.

Sam Neill leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of the world’s most respected actors. His memorable performances, particularly as Dr. Alan Grant, inspired generations of moviegoers and ensured his place among Hollywood’s most cherished stars. He is survived by his four children.
