Tedde Moore, Beloved ‘A Christmas Story’ Actress, Dies at 79

Posted on August 11, 2026

Remembering the Canadian actress whose unforgettable portrayal of Miss Shields made her a cherished part of a holiday tradition for generations.

Tedde Moore, the Canadian actress best known for her memorable role as Miss Shields in the beloved Christmas classic A Christmas Story, has died at the age of 79.

According to TMZ, Moore passed away last Wednesday in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada. She was surrounded by family in her final moments.

Her death marks the loss of a talented performer whose work touched audiences both on screen and beyond it.

A Teacher Who Became Part of Christmas History
For millions of viewers, Tedde Moore will forever be remembered as Miss Shields, the elementary school teacher of Ralphie Parker in the 1983 holiday classic A Christmas Story.

As Ralphie dreams of receiving a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, Miss Shields becomes one of the adults who famously responds to his wish with the now-iconic warning that he might “shoot his eye out.”

Moore brought a memorable combination of authority, warmth and humor to the character. Though her role was relatively small, Miss Shields became one of the many unforgettable characters that helped make A Christmas Story a lasting holiday tradition.

Decades after the film’s release, Moore’s performance continued to be discovered and enjoyed by new generations of viewers every Christmas season.

Remembered With Love
A Facebook post shared under Moore’s name announced her passing and offered a touching tribute to the actress.

“Forever the teacher, she had a quote for every occasion and a special way of touching the lives and hearts of everyone she met,” the message said.

Those words capture the affection felt for Moore not only as an actress, but as a person whose life extended far beyond the characters she played.

A Career Beyond ‘A Christmas Story’
While A Christmas Story remains Moore’s most recognizable credit, her acting career included a variety of other film and television roles.

She appeared in films including Second Wind, Murder by Decree and Down the Road Again. Years after becoming associated with one of the most recognizable Christmas movies of all time, Moore returned to the holiday world by portraying Mrs. Claus in the 2011 television movie Mistletoe Over Manhattan.

Her career reflected the depth and versatility of a Canadian performer who continued working across decades.

A Life Surrounded by Family
Moore’s life was also defined by her family. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she had two children with Canadian film and television director Donald Shebib, as well as a daughter from a previous relationship and a foster daughter.

Her family was with her when she passed away, according to the tribute shared after her death.

A Lasting Holiday Legacy
Some actors become associated with a single role, but that role can become something much bigger than a line on a résumé.

For Tedde Moore, Miss Shields became part of the fabric of Christmas for generations of moviegoers. Every holiday season, as families return to A Christmas Story, her performance lives on alongside Ralphie’s unforgettable Christmas wish and the many characters who made the film a classic.

Though Tedde Moore is gone, her work will continue to bring smiles and memories to audiences around the world.

Rest in peace, Tedde Moore. Thank you for giving generations of families a memorable part of their Christmas tradition. Your performance will not be forgotten.
