Head lice are every parent’s nightmare—itchy, persistent, and time-consuming to remove. The problem often spikes when school starts after the holidays, as kids have been in close contact during summer.
Lice spread easily among children, though they can’t jump or fly. They crawl from hair to hair and rarely spread through hats or brushes, as lice weaken quickly once off the scalp.
How to Detect Lice:
Itching usually begins 4–6 weeks after infection. Lice are 1–3mm long, translucent, and can be brown, black, gray, or red. Use a lice comb to check the scalp—lice will fall into the sink.
Lice Eggs (Nits):
Often easier to spot than lice. Eggs near the scalp are dark if alive and light if hatched. Only treat if live lice are found—empty eggs can grow out or be combed away.
Natural Lice Treatment (from Healthy Life Center):
You’ll need:
- Lice comb
- Mouthwash
- White vinegar
- Shower cap or plastic bag
- Towel
Steps:
- Soak hair in mouthwash and cover for 1 hour.
- Rinse, then soak hair in white vinegar and cover for another hour.
- Wash with shampoo and comb thoroughly.
- To prevent lice, spray a little mouthwash on your child’s hair before school.
