Our wedding day was the moment I had dreamed about most. Everything needed to be flawless: the gown, the venue, the music—I prepared every single detail. Yet everything began destr0ying the moment my mother-in-law stepped in.
She believed she knew everything better than anyone else. Her word was “law” in the family, and even on our special day she decided to demonstrate who controlled the table. First she rearranged the guests’ seating, then she quarreled with the host, and finally she began openly instructing me and my husband how we should act.
I tried to remain calm, but I realized a bit more and the celebration would completely turn into a wa:r zone. Then came the moment when my parents selected to present their gift. They stood, shared heartfelt words about wishing our new home to always be full of joy and warmth, and passed us an envelope containing the keys to an apartment.
The hall froze instantly. Everyone clapped, and I couldn’t restrain my tears. But then my mother-in-law rose from her chair.
Her face burned with fury.
— What is the meaning of this? — she yelled. — Do you intend to embarrass me?
Do you believe only you can give anything to this couple? How dare you humili:ate me publicly like this?! Take those keys back.
We don’t accept them. She already waved her arms and moved toward my parents. Guests exchanged uneasy glances, the tension was unbearable.
