Jay Leno Shares a Heartfelt Update on His Wife After Dementia Diagnosis

Posted on January 1, 2026

In April 2024, Mavis Leno, the beloved wife of Jay Leno, received a diagnosis of advanced dementia. Since then, the former late-night show host has been granted conservatorship over Mavis and has openly shared his experiences about living and caregiving for a spouse with dementia.

Jay and Mavis Leno have shared a devoted marriage spanning many decades. Their journey began when a then-rising comedian, Jay, performed at the renowned Comedy Store in the 1970s, where they first met.

Mavis once confessed her initial skepticism about marriage, citing Jay was “not very good at dating” and her belief that she would never marry. Yet, meeting Jay shifted her perspective.

“I always had this idea that I would never get married,” Mavis revealed to People Magazine back in 1987. “But with Jay, I realized this was the first time I felt a serene sense of having reached my destination.”

They married in 1980, and Jay attributed part of their lasting bond to sharing laughter and playfulness. He advised, “I always tell guys when they meet a woman, ‘Marry your conscience. Marry someone who’s the person you wish you could be, and it works out okay.’”

Embracing Life Changes After Mavis’s Diagnosis

In recent years, the dynamics of Jay and Mavis’s marriage have shifted profoundly. Her diagnosis in 2024 brought changes, yet Jay chose not to place Mavis in a care facility. At the age of 75, he dedicated himself to her care, obtaining conservatorship to ensure her well-being.

At the time of her diagnosis, Mavis’s lawyer conveyed her agreement with this arrangement, noting she’s “receiving excellent care with her husband, Mr. Leno.”

On November 9, during the 34th annual Love Ride event, held by Harley-Davidson in Glendale, California, Jay Leno addressed the audience about his current life with Mavis. Leno, who serves as the grand marshal for this charity event, spoke candidly about their journey together. Since Love Ride’s inception in 1984, it has garnered more than $25 million for various causes.

During the event, he shared, “I’ve been very lucky in my life. My wife is fighting dementia, but it’s not cancer or a tumor, so I enjoy caring for her. It doesn’t feel like work. People express their sympathy, and I get it, many are going through similar things. But it’s okay. I like being with her, I enjoy her company; we have a good time. It is what it is.”

A Grateful Heart

While acknowledging the challenges, Leno expressed appreciation for being able to be a caregiver. He feels “lucky” to be able to support Mavis, both personally and medically.

“I’m very lucky. I enjoy her company. Right after this ride, I’m heading home to make her lunch,” Leno shared.

Jay Leno continues to provide steadfast support for his wife, Mavis, showcasing the strength of love and dedication during this time. If you believe that love truly makes the world a better place, do share this story.
