Remembering Marcus Gilbert: A Life in Film, Television and Theatre

Posted on February 3, 2026

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Marcus Gilbert, who died on Sunday 11 January 2026 at the age of 67 after a brave battle with cancer.

Best remembered as the unforgettable Rupert Campbell-Black in the 1993 television adaptation of Riders, Marcus embodied the very definition of a leading man — dashing, charismatic and impossibly charming.

Yet those who met him knew there was far more beneath the surface: a wry smile, a knowing twinkle, and a genuine warmth that made everyone feel seen.

From early television roles in the 1980s to Rambo III, Doctor Who, and a career that spanned stage, screen and more than fifty commercials, Marcus brought generosity and professionalism to everything he did.

He was even considered for the role of James Bond — a testament to the presence and appeal he carried so effortlessly.

Tributes from friends, colleagues and fans speak volumes. Remembered as broad-shouldered and deep-voiced yet wonderfully self-effacing, Marcus had an uncommon gift for making others feel interesting, valued and heard.

He found happiness again later in life with Lysette Anthony, and remained devoted to his family, especially his children, Maxi and Aaliya, after the heartbreaking loss of his wife Homaa in 2020.

Marcus Gilbert gave us joy, romance and adventure on screen — but his kindness and humanity off screen are what will linger longest. He will be greatly missed, and fondly remembered, by all who admired him.

Rest in peace, Marcus.
