‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Known as “McSteamy,” Dies at 53

Posted on March 13, 2026

LOS ANGELES — Eric Dane, the American actor best known for portraying the charismatic Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on the hit medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, nearly a year after publicly revealing that he had been diagnosed with the progressive neurological disease. His family confirmed that he died surrounded by loved ones after complications related to ALS, which ultimately led to respiratory failure.

A Breakout Role That Made Him a Television Icon

Eric Dane rose to global fame through his role on the long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Introduced during the show’s second season, his character Dr. Mark Sloan, a talented and confident plastic surgeon nicknamed “McSteamy,” quickly became one of the series’ most beloved personalities.

His charm, wit, and complex relationships with other characters turned him into a fan favorite, helping shape some of the show’s most memorable storylines. Dane appeared on the series for several seasons before his character’s dramatic exit in 2012.

Career Beyond Grey’s Anatomy

While Grey’s Anatomy made him a household name, Dane had already built a steady career in television and film. Early in his career he appeared in popular shows such as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Charmed.

He later went on to star in the action drama The Last Ship from 2014 to 2018 and gained a new generation of fans with his role as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s critically acclaimed series Euphoria.

Dane also appeared in several films, including X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, and Valentine’s Day.

In 2025, Dane publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Despite the devastating diagnosis and the gradual loss of physical abilities, he continued to advocate for awareness of the disease and its impact on patients and families.

Friends and colleagues described him as courageous and determined during his final months, continuing to work and remain active in the entertainment industry even as his health declined.

Family and Legacy

Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family said in a statement that he spent his final days surrounded by those closest to him.

Tributes from fans, fellow actors, and filmmakers have poured in across social media and the entertainment industry, celebrating Dane not only for his memorable performances but also for his warmth and generosity off screen.

Though he is best remembered as the unforgettable “McSteamy,” Eric Dane’s career and personal courage left a lasting mark on television and on the many fans who admired him around the world.
