‘Father Knows Best’ Star Passed Away At 80

Posted on March 15, 2026

Lauren Chapin — best known for playing the youngest Anderson child, Kathy “Kitten” Anderson, on the beloved 1950s sitcom Father Knows Best — has died, according to TMZ. She was 80.

Chapin starred as the precocious “Kitten” for the show’s six-season run. After the series ended, she returned for a Father Knows Best reunion and Christmas special in 1977.

Father Knows Best was a popular American family sitcom that aired from 1954 to 1960. The series followed the Anderson family, led by wise and patient father Jim Anderson (Robert Young) and loving mother Margaret (Jane Wyatt), as they navigated everyday life in middle-class America.

The show centered on relatable family issues involving their three children — Betty, Bud and Kathy (“Kitten”) — blending gentle humor with heartfelt life lessons. Known for its wholesome tone and traditional values, the series became one of the defining family programs of the 1950s.

Originally starting on radio before transitioning to television, the show ran for six seasons and won multiple Emmy Awards. It remains a classic example of early American television’s idealized portrayal of family life.

Chapin began her acting career with an uncredited role in the 1954 film A Star Is Born, starring Judy Garland, and also appeared on the CBS anthology series Lux Video Theatre. Following her success on Father Knows Best, Chapin appeared on General Electric Theater alongside Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows, the 1976 comedy musical The Amorous Adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and the 1980 film Scout’s Honor, in which she played Ace’s mother.

After stepping away from Hollywood for decades, Chapin returned to acting with a recurring role in the 2016 family drama School Bus Diaries.

In her adult life, she managed artists — including her daughter, Latin pop singer Summer Healy-Chapin — and worked as a counter manager for Guerlain perfume in Florida in 2001. She was also deeply involved in her church community.

Chapin authored two books and helped raise more than $2 million for underprivileged and abused children over the years.
