John Nolan, Beloved Actor and Christopher Nolan Collaborator, Dies at 87

Posted on April 12, 2026

John Nolan, the actor known for his role in Batman Begins and the uncle of director Christopher Nolan and producer Jonathan Nolan, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was first reported by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald, though further details have not yet been disclosed.

Nolan worked closely with his nephew Christopher Nolan on several projects, including Batman Begins (2005), where he portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks. He later reprised this role in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which was co-written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher. Their collaboration began much earlier with Following (1998), Christopher Nolan’s directorial debut, and continued through to Dunkirk (2017), marking their final project together. Nolan also worked with Jonathan Nolan on the CBS series Person of Interest, which Jonathan created and executive produced.

Born in Kent, England, in 1938, Nolan began his career on stage, performing with the Richmond Theatre, the Royal Court Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1970, he took on the title role in the miniseries Daniel Deronda, and later appeared in the second season of the sci-fi series Doomwatch. He also played Nick Faunt in all seven episodes of Shabby Tiger.

His film credits include Terror and The World Is Full of Married Men, while his television work spans shows such as Return of the Saint, Crown Court, Enemy at the Door, Masterpiece, Silent Witness, and Dune: Prophecy, which marked his final screen appearance.

During the early years of his stage career, Nolan met actor Kim Hartman while working on a production of Romeo and Juliet. They married in 1975 and had two children, Tom and Miranda.

Following news of his passing, fans shared tributes online, remembering his performances and long career. Many praised his work, particularly in Person of Interest and Following, while offering condolences to his family.

Nolan is survived by his wife, his two children, and his grandchildren.
