Canadian Skier Sparks Avalanche – Watch His Incredible Survival. (Video)

Posted on April 28, 2026

A skier who was venturing off official trails in Canada triggered an avalanche but miraculously emerged without any injuries. The dramatic incident took place on January 20 along a backcountry route known as Vortex, which lies outside the Lake Louise ski area in Banff National Park, according to Parks Canada.

The frightening event was captured on video and later shared by Parks Canada on Facebook. The footage shows a massive flow of snow breaking free from the mountainside, sweeping the skier violently down the slope. The video was recorded by the skier’s companion, who was positioned safely away from the danger zone.

During the avalanche, the skier was carried all the way to the valley floor, ending up buried in snow up to his waist. Despite the severity of the situation, he miraculously escaped without a single injury. Authorities emphasized that the group involved consisted of experienced and well-prepared backcountry skiers. They had planned their descent carefully, took turns skiing down the slope, and maintained a safe meeting point where everyone could regroup.

While this story had a surprisingly happy ending, Parks Canada and rescue teams stressed that such risks should not be taken lightly. Off-trail or “freeride” skiing carries significant dangers, particularly the potential to trigger avalanches, as was evident in this incident. Experts strongly advise skiers to remain within designated ski resort boundaries unless they are thoroughly trained, equipped, and prepared for backcountry conditions.

Skiers and snowboarders venturing into remote areas are also urged to study terrain and routes in advance, understand snow conditions, and always heed avalanche warnings. Even highly skilled individuals can be caught off guard if they ignore cautionary signs. Safety measures, proper equipment, and experience are essential to minimize the risks associated with backcountry skiing.

This incident serves as both a thrilling story and a sobering reminder: while backcountry adventures can offer unparalleled beauty and excitement, they also come with real and potentially life-threatening risks. Miraculously, this skier walked away unharmed, but authorities continue to encourage caution and preparation to prevent similar situations in the future.
