Barry Manilow Shares His Cancer Journey — We Stand With Him.

Posted on April 29, 2026

Barry Manilow’s Battle with Lung Cancer: A Story of Strength and Resilience 💔🎤💖

Legendary singer Barry Manilow, known for timeless hits like Mandy, Copacabana, and Somewhere Down the Road, recently shared a deeply personal update: he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The news came in late December 2025, following a prolonged bout of bronchitis that lasted over six weeks and relapsed for another five.

Manilow revealed that the diagnosis came after a precautionary MRI, ordered to ensure no serious complications arose from his lingering respiratory issues. The scan detected a “cancerous spot” on his left lung, identified early—a fortunate outcome he credits to luck and excellent medical care.

“It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news,” Manilow stated.

Treatment Plan and Positivity

Despite the serious news, Manilow reassured fans that his treatment will not involve chemotherapy or radiation. Instead, he will undergo surgery to remove the spot, with doctors confident that the cancer has not spread. Ever the optimist, he joked that his recovery regimen would include “chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns,” reflecting the humor and resilience that have defined his life and career.

Tour Adjustments

To accommodate his recovery, his arena tour across nine U.S. cities, originally scheduled for January 2026, has been postponed to late February through April. All tickets remain valid for the new dates. However, his Valentine’s weekend concerts at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino will go on as planned, offering both Manilow and fans a sense of continuity.

“Something tells me February is going to be one big party,” he wrote, adding a heartfelt reminder: “If you even have the slightest symptom, get tested!”

On January 2, 2026, Manilow shared a smiling selfie from the hospital with a text overlay reading: “Better today!”—a small but meaningful sign of his optimism.

A Life of Resilience

This is not Manilow’s first health challenge. In 2022, he tested positive for COVID-19 just hours before opening night of his stage musical Harmony. Despite this, he encouraged fans to attend the show in his place, demonstrating dedication to both his craft and audience.

Even at 82, Manilow remains active and energetic, emphasizing the importance of staying busy:

“I think of people who are 80… they look older than I do. They’re retired. You know, that ain’t me. I’m just getting started. Staying busy keeps me feeling sharp and energized. You stay young if you keep working… your brain stays working.”

His love for music continues to drive him. He assures fans that as long as he can hit the high notes—like the F natural on Even Now—he will remain on stage:

“I’m still healthy. I’m strong and I’ve still got my voice and my energy. The night I can’t hit the F natural on Even Now, that’s the night I throw in the towel. But I can still do it.”

Smoking and Health Awareness

Manilow’s diagnosis also brings attention to his history with smoking. He began smoking at nine, continued for three decades, and later switched to vaping. His openness about these habits underscores his commitment to using his platform to encourage early screening and proactive health care, especially for long-term smokers or those with respiratory issues.

Enduring Career and Connection with Fans

Beyond health challenges, Manilow’s career spans decades of hits, sold-out shows, and deep fan connections. From Mandy to Copacabana and Could It Be Magic, his songs have become cultural landmarks. Known for his emotional live performances, he blends vocal skill, piano virtuosity, and stage presence to create memorable shared experiences with audiences.

Fans and fellow artists alike admire his professionalism, dedication, and resilience. Even now, his transparency and humor in the face of illness have inspired an outpouring of support:

“Keep healing, Barry… You can do it. God is good all the time.”
“You even make a hospital gown look fine! 😉❤️”

Surgery and Recovery

Following early detection, Manilow opted for surgery as the first step in treatment—a localized approach that avoids chemotherapy or radiation. He reassured fans that he is confident in his doctors and committed to maintaining positivity:

“The doctors do not believe it has spread, and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”

Medical experts have praised his optimism, which can play a crucial role in recovery. Manilow continues to advocate for early detection, encouraging anyone with persistent symptoms to seek medical advice promptly.

Family Support and Community

Throughout his diagnosis, Manilow’s family and close friends have been a vital source of support. Their presence reinforces his commitment to staying active, engaged, and connected with fans. His philanthropic efforts and advocacy for health awareness further demonstrate the impact of his personal openness.

A Legacy That Endures

Even while facing health challenges in his 80s, Barry Manilow’s influence remains immense. His contributions to pop music, his live performances, and his honesty about personal struggles have inspired generations. Hits like Copacabana and Mandy continue to resonate, while his dedication to fans and stagecraft ensures his legacy will endure.

Manilow’s story is one of resilience, optimism, and enduring artistry—a testament to a life lived with passion, transparency, and love for music and community.
