Jennifer Harmon, Broadway and One Life to Live Star, Dies at 82

Posted on May 12, 2026

Jennifer Harmon, the acclaimed stage and television actress celebrated for a career that spanned more than five decades, has died at the age of 82. Her family confirmed that she passed away on Saturday in New York.

A commanding presence in American theatre, Harmon appeared on Broadway 21 times, earning recognition as one of the industry’s most dependable and versatile performers. While theatre audiences admired her dramatic range, television viewers widely recognized her for portraying the scheming Cathy Craig Lord on ABC’s One Life to Live — a role that earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination during her original run from 1976 to 1978.

Known for seamlessly moving between theatre and television, Harmon built a reputation as a true acting chameleon. Her Broadway journey began in 1965 with a revival of You Can’t Take It With You and continued through 2012’s Other Desert Cities. Over the years, she performed in productions featuring the works of legendary playwrights including Tennessee Williams, Noël Coward, and Edward Albee.

Beyond her performances, Harmon was also respected behind the scenes, serving as an understudy for celebrated stars such as Judi Dench, Jessica Lange, and Stockard Channing.

Soap opera fans especially remember her unforgettable turn as Cathy Craig Lord, the fifth actress to portray the character on One Life to Live. One of the show’s most memorable storylines featured her character kidnapping Viki Lord’s baby, cementing Harmon’s place among daytime television’s iconic villains.

She later returned to the soap in the early 1990s in a completely different role, portraying an attorney. Her daytime television credits also included appearances on Guiding Light and Another World.

Outside the soap opera world, Harmon enjoyed an extensive television career with appearances in hit series such as Dallas, St. Elsewhere, The Good Wife, Oz, and Rescue Me.

Jennifer Harmon leaves behind a lasting legacy defined by consistency, versatility, and emotional depth. Whether portraying complex women on stage or unforgettable antagonists on television, she remained a respected and enduring figure in New York’s acting community.
