All-Pro 49ers Linebacker, Dead at 36

Posted on June 17, 2026

Former San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Aldon Smith has died at the age of 36, the team confirmed. The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Smith was one of the NFL’s most dominant young defensive players during the early years of his career. Selected seventh overall by the 49ers in the 2011 NFL Draft, he made an immediate impact, recording 14 sacks as a rookie and helping lead San Francisco back into championship contention.

His breakout 2012 season cemented his place among the league’s elite defenders. Smith earned First-Team All-Pro honors after registering a franchise-record 19.5 sacks, helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl XLVII. His 33.5 sacks over his first two NFL seasons remain one of the most remarkable starts to a career by a pass rusher.

Despite his immense talent, Smith’s football career was repeatedly interrupted by legal troubles and NFL suspensions. After his tenure with the 49ers ended, he had stints with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys, attempting several comebacks before his final NFL season in 2020.

In a statement announcing his passing, the 49ers said they were “devastated by the sudden and tragic passing” of Smith, praising both his extraordinary talent and the infectious smile that brightened every room he entered.

Reports indicate Smith was helping deliver pizzas to a charitable organization in the San Francisco Bay Area shortly before he was found unresponsive. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Smith’s family has announced plans to have his brain examined by researchers studying chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), as they seek answers regarding his sudden death.
