Jonathan drove north through sheets of rain that blurred the highway into streaks of silver and black. The stormline had settled over the coast hours earlier, turning the ocean into a restless wall of darkness. Every few miles he checked his mirrors, convinced the same gray SUV was following him. Sometimes it was there. Sometimes it wasn’t. The uncertainty was worse than confirmation.
The coordinates from the latest anonymous message led to an abandoned service road overlooking the cliffs. According to public records, the area had been closed for nearly a decade after a series of unexplained landslides. Yet someone had maintained the access gate. Fresh tire tracks cut through the mud, and the chain hanging from the fence had been recently replaced.
Jonathan parked out of sight and continued on foot.
The wind fought him every step of the way. Rain soaked through his jacket as he climbed toward the overlook. When he finally reached the edge, he understood why the photographs had never been clear. From a distance, the formation beneath the cliff looked natural, just another jagged section of coastline battered by centuries of waves. But through the lens of his camera, details emerged that should not have existed.
Straight lines.
Perfect angles.
Symmetry.
The red symbol was there too, larger than any image had suggested, painted across a section of dark stone that seemed almost metallic under the storm clouds. It wasn’t faded by saltwater or time. It looked fresh.
Jonathan snapped dozens of photographs. As he zoomed in, his stomach tightened. The symbol wasn’t painted on rock at all. It covered a massive circular surface partially buried within the cliffside, as if something enormous had been hidden beneath layers of earth and concrete.
A low vibration hummed through the ground.
He froze.
At first he thought it was thunder. Then he realized the sound was too steady, too mechanical. Small pebbles danced across the wet stone near his boots. Somewhere below him, something was moving.
His phone buzzed.
No caller ID.
No number.
Just a message.

Jonathan stared at the screen.
Another vibration rolled through the cliff, stronger this time. A crack echoed somewhere beneath the overlook, followed by the groan of shifting stone. The circular structure below began to emerge as sections of earth collapsed away from its surface. Hidden lights flickered beneath the rain, glowing faintly through decades of concealment.
His pulse hammered in his ears.
Every instinct screamed at him to run.
Instead, he raised the camera.
