Scott Bryce, the veteran television actor best known for portraying Craig Montgomery on the long-running daytime drama As the World Turns, has died at the age of 68 following a battle with cancer.
Bryce’s son, Jackson, announced his father’s passing in an emotional Instagram post, revealing that the actor died on July 12. He shared that Bryce had been diagnosed with stage three esophageal cancer, which later spread to his brain.
“This evening my father lost his long-fought battle with cancer,” Jackson wrote. “What began as stage three esophageal cancer eventually spread and became brain tumors that took his life away from him.”
He remembered his father as someone who faced his illness with unwavering determination, writing that Bryce fought with “pride and courage” and never lost hope throughout his treatment.
Bryce became a familiar face to daytime television audiences when he joined As the World Turns as Craig Montgomery in 1982. His acclaimed performance earned consecutive Daytime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1986 and 1987. Although he left the soap in 1987, he reprised the role several times over the following decades, including appearances in the late 1980s, the 1990s, and again in 2007.
In primetime television, Bryce was also recognized for his role as Mike McQueen in Ryan Murphy’s WB comedy-drama Popular. He played the father of Leslie Bibb’s Brooke McQueen, whose engagement to Jane McPherson created the blended family at the heart of the series. Popular aired for two seasons between 1999 and 2001, with Bryce appearing in all 43 episodes.
Bryce launched his television career with a recurring role on The Facts of Life, playing Rick Bonner in four episodes. He went on to build an extensive résumé with guest appearances on numerous hit series, including The Golden Girls, Who’s the Boss?, The Commish, and L.A. Law. He also had a recurring role on Murphy Brown as the husband of Corky Sherwood, played by Faith Ford.
Throughout the 1990s and beyond, Bryce remained a familiar presence on television, appearing in acclaimed series such as Matlock, Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, Early Edition, Spin City, Judging Amy, ER, 30 Rock, Reba, Homeland, Gossip Girl, Law & Order: SVU, One Life to Live, and The Good Fight.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Scott Bryce established himself as a versatile actor whose work left a lasting impression on both daytime and primetime television.
