Franco Baresi, the legendary former AC Milan captain and one of the greatest defenders in football history, died on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the age of 66.
AC Milan officially confirmed the death of its honorary vice-president, describing the announcement as an extremely painful moment for the club and its supporters around the world.
“The entire history of AC Milan is in tears,” the club said in its tribute. Milan added that Baresi’s character, integrity and example would remain permanently embedded in the club’s identity, just like his iconic number 6 shirt.
The club did not immediately disclose the precise cause of his death. Baresi underwent a minimally invasive procedure in 2025 after doctors discovered a pulmonary nodule during routine medical examinations. AC Milan said at the time that the operation had been successful and that an oncology specialist had recommended a course of immunotherapy.
A Symbol of Loyalty to AC Milan
Born on May 8, 1960, in Travagliato, Italy, Baresi spent his entire professional playing career with AC Milan.
He joined the club’s youth system as a teenager and made his senior debut at the age of 17 in April 1978. Although he initially appeared too small and physically slight to become an elite central defender, his intelligence, anticipation, positioning and leadership transformed him into one of the game’s most influential players.
Baresi remained loyal to Milan even when the club suffered relegation to Serie B. His commitment during those difficult years helped establish him as a symbol of loyalty among Rossoneri supporters.
He was appointed captain while still in his early twenties and went on to lead the team for approximately 15 seasons. During his 20-year senior career, he made more than 700 appearances for the club.

World Cup Glory With Italy
Baresi was also a major figure for the Italian national team, earning 81 international appearances.
He was a member of the Italy squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Although he did not play during the tournament, the triumph made him a world champion at the age of 22.
He later played a central role when Italy hosted the 1990 World Cup. The Italians conceded only two goals throughout the competition and finished in third place after losing their semifinal against Argentina in a penalty shootout.
Baresi captained Italy at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. He suffered a serious knee injury during the group stage and underwent surgery, apparently ending his tournament. However, he made a remarkable recovery and returned just 25 days later to face Brazil in the final.
Despite having recently undergone surgery, Baresi produced an exceptional performance during the goalless match, playing the full 120 minutes. Italy eventually lost the final in a penalty shootout, with Baresi missing the opening Italian penalty.
The miss became one of the most emotional moments of his career, but it did little to diminish the admiration he received for his courageous return and commanding performance.

Baresi retired from professional football in 1997. AC Milan responded by retiring his number 6 shirt—an extraordinary honour reflecting his importance to the club.
