Canadian actor Scott Hylands dies aged 83

Posted on August 3, 2026

Canadian actor Scott Hylands, best known for his memorable roles in Night Heat and Fargo, has passed away at the age of 83.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his son, cinematographer Luke Hylands, who paid tribute to his father in an emotional Instagram post.

“Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life,” Luke wrote.

“I am heartbroken to share the news that my dad Scott passed away Wednesday night. My family and I are still trying to process this incredible loss. There simply aren’t enough words to describe what you meant to me. You were my forever hero and my best friend. Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye, Dad.”

Born in Alberta, Canada, in 1943, Scott was raised by his mother, Ruth, after his father, Walter, was killed in action during the Second World War in 1945.

Although he initially studied zoology at the University of British Columbia, Scott discovered a passion for acting and switched to theatre arts. He later moved to New York City to develop his craft before making his film debut in the 1969 thriller Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting.

Over the next five decades, Scott built an impressive career across film, television and theatre. His film credits included Earthquake, Slipstream, Bittersweet Love, Operation Snafu and Fools. Television audiences also came to know him through appearances in popular series such as Kung Fu, Wonder Woman, Police Story, The Waltons, Hart to Hart and The Magician.

After returning to Canada in the 1980s, Scott landed the career-defining role of Detective Kevin “OB” O’Brien in the hit police drama Night Heat. The series ran from 1985 to 1989 and made television history as the first original Canadian drama to air simultaneously on a U.S. network during its original run.

He continued working steadily throughout his career, appearing in acclaimed productions including To Catch A Killer, NYPD Blue, Titanic, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, V and Supernatural.

One of Scott’s final standout performances came in 2017, when he portrayed Ennis Stussy in the third season of the Emmy-winning series Fargo. His role played a key part in one of the season’s central storylines.

With a career spanning more than 50 years, Scott Hylands leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of Canada’s most respected actors.

He is survived by his wife, Veronica, his son Luke, and his daughter Rebecca.

Rest in peace, Scott Hylands.
