Veteran Canadian actor Scott Hylands, best known for portraying Detective Kevin “O.B.” O’Brien in the popular police drama Night Heat, has died at the age of 83.
Hylands died on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. His son, Luke Hylands, announced the news on social media, describing his father as his “forever hero” and best friend. The actor is survived by his wife, Veronica, and his children, Luke and Rebecca.
A specific cause of death has not been officially disclosed. However, Hylands had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in October 2021 and had undergone treatment for the disease. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed his death and reported on his previous diagnosis.
Family Pays Emotional Tribute
Announcing his father’s passing, Luke remembered Hylands as much more than a celebrated performer. He described him as a husband, father, actor, director, writer, storyteller, friend and lover of life.
The tribute reflected the profound influence Hylands had on those closest to him, both personally and professionally. His family said they were still trying to process the enormous loss.
News of his death prompted tributes from viewers and entertainment figures who remembered his distinctive screen presence, powerful voice and ability to bring authority and emotional depth to his characters.
The Defining Role in Night Heat
Hylands achieved his greatest television recognition through Night Heat, in which he played the tough and experienced Detective Kevin “O.B.” O’Brien. The Canadian police drama aired between 1985 and 1989 and followed detectives working the overnight shift in an unnamed North American city.

O’Brien was the cynical veteran partnered with the younger and more impulsive Detective Frank Giambone, played by Jeff Wincott. Hylands brought toughness, intelligence and humanity to the character, making O’Brien one of Canadian television’s most memorable police detectives.
The programme became an important production in Canadian broadcasting history. It was the first original Canadian drama series to be broadcast concurrently on a major American television network, airing on CTV in Canada and CBS in the United States.
The role earned Hylands two Gemini Award nominations and introduced him to a much wider international audience. According to Entertainment Weekly, the series remained the defining television role of his extensive career.
From Alberta to the Stage
Scott Hylands was born on February 27, 1943, in Lethbridge, Alberta, and was raised in British Columbia. He initially studied zoology at the University of British Columbia before transferring to its developing theatre programme.
He graduated with honours in theatre in 1964 and soon moved to New York City to pursue acting professionally. One of his earliest major opportunities was the leading role in an off-Broadway production of Billy Liar.
Hylands subsequently joined the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, becoming one of its original company members. He performed in more than 20 stage productions, establishing the strong theatrical foundation that would remain central to his career.
Even after becoming an established television and film actor, he regularly returned to live theatre. His stage work included productions of Waiting for Godot, The Tempest, Under Milk Wood and a one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol. He also worked as a theatre director and writer.

A Career Spanning More Than Five Decades
Hylands made his feature-film debut in the 1969 psychological thriller Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting, directed by Mark Robson. He later appeared in several prominent movies, including Earthquake, The Boys in Company C, Death Hunt, Fools, Slipstream and Rememory.

Hylands spent much of his later life on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, where he continued to participate in theatre and other creative projects. Despite his health challenges, he remained deeply committed to acting and reportedly had little interest in formally retiring.
Throughout a career lasting more than five decades, Hylands moved comfortably between film, television and theatre. Although he was often cast as villains or hard-edged authority figures early in his career, his performance in Night Heat revealed the emotional complexity and compassion he could bring to a leading role.
