I Thought My New Girlfriend Was Bonding Perfectly With My Son – But When He Innocently Explained the Rules of the New ‘Game’ She Taught Him, All the Blood Drained From My Face

Posted on August 15, 2026

After losing my wife, I never thought I’d trust someone enough to become part of my seven-year-old son Max’s life. But Maya seemed different.

Then, during Max’s birthday dinner, he casually asked, “Do we have to play the family game again?”

Maya immediately went quiet.

Max explained that every Saturday, Maya used three jars labeled Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.

He earned Today points for spending time with her.

He earned Tomorrow points for calling Maya “Mom” or telling people she was his mother.

Then came the part that made my stomach drop.

He got bonus points if he went an entire Saturday without talking about his late mother.

Maya had even removed several photos of my wife from the house, telling Max they made me sad.

When I confronted her, the truth finally came out.

She believed that if Max started seeing her as his mother, I would realize we were ready to become a “real family”—and eventually propose.

She had turned my son’s grief and memories into a game designed to create the future she wanted.

I ended the relationship.

That night, I removed the labels from the three jars and told Max something he should never have needed to hear:

Nobody gets to decide how much he is allowed to love or remember his mother.

Weeks later, Max drew a family picture.

His mother was still there.

Beside us, he left one empty space.

“Maybe somebody later,” he said.

Our future didn’t need a replacement.

It simply needed room.
