After my husband’s heart surgery, we told our grown children we were finally taking a small vacation. Instead of being happy, they accused us of spending their inheritance.
Richard and I had worked for decades, paid for college, helped with homes and bills, and saved carefully. The trip was only four nights at a modest hotel, but our daughter Melissa demanded to know the cost.
“You can’t keep spending our inheritance,” she said.
Our son Kevin agreed, asking whether we even needed another trip.
After they left, Richard contacted our attorney. We created a trust that placed our health, comfort, and independence first. Our children would inherit what remained, but 40 percent would support cardiac rehabilitation and home care for elderly patients.
When Kevin discovered the change, he called angrily, demanding that we reverse it. Melissa also visited, claiming they had only been concerned about our future.
Richard reminded them that after he nearly died, they had reacted to our vacation by calculating what it might cost them.
Melissa eventually admitted she feared financial insecurity. Kevin stayed angry longer, but later apologized for acting as though our money already belonged to him.
We kept the trust unchanged and took the trip.
Since then, Melissa visits without asking for anything, and Kevin now jokes that we should spend our inheritance.
Our children may receive less one day, but we refuse to stop living so they can inherit more.
