Full part: “After I gave birth, I brought my baby to meet the grandpa who raised me — but the moment he saw her face, he burst into tears and said, “This is impossible. You have no idea what you’ve done.”

“After I gave birth, I brought my baby to meet the grandpa who raised me — but the moment he saw her face, he burst into tears and said, “This is impossible. You have no idea what you’ve done.”

My grandpa, Bruno, was the only father I ever had after my parents died in a car crash when I was four years old.

So when I got pregnant at twenty-seven and the man I loved disappeared the exact same night I told him, Grandpa was the one who held me together.

He had never met Luke. I had kept putting off introducing them, telling myself there would be plenty of time once things between us became more serious. But after Luke vanished without so much as a text message or a goodbye, part of me was almost relieved they had never met. It saved me the embarrassment of explaining how a man I loved could run so fast from a positive pregnancy test.

“You bring that baby into this world, sweetheart. We’ll figure out the rest together,” Grandpa had said, squeezing my hand on his porch that night.

And he meant every word. He built the oak crib himself in his workshop, drove me to every single prenatal appointment, and cried tears of pure joy when the ultrasound revealed I was having a baby girl.

Then my delivery went wrong. Two days in the hospital turned into nearly two weeks of agony as little Brucie fought for her life in the NICU.

But from the moment the nurses finally laid her against my chest, one thing was impossible to miss.

She looked painfully, undeniably like Luke.

Same thick, dark curls. Same tiny, distinct cleft in her chin.

And those eyes—her most striking feature. One was a bright, piercing ocean blue. The other was so dark brown it looked almost black. Heterochromia. It was the exact same unusual eye pattern that had mesmerized me the first time Luke smiled at me in a coffee shop two years prior.

When the doctors finally gave us clearance to leave, I drove straight to Grandpa’s cottage at the edge of town.

Grandpa was sitting in his porch rocker when I pulled into the gravel driveway. The moment he saw me step out of the car, he jumped up so fast his morning coffee spilled across the wooden floorboards.

“There are my girls!” he cheered, his voice trembling with emotion.

I walked up the steps and gently placed a swaddled little Brucie into his arms.

His radiant smile vanished instantly.

He stared down at her tiny face—first at the blue eye, then at the dark brown eye. The color completely drained from his cheeks, leaving him a ghostly, hollow white.

“Grandpa?” I whispered, taking a cautious step forward.

His arms began to shake so hard I instinctively reached out to steady Brucie.

“Who is her father, Clover?” he asked, his voice barely a raspy whisper.

I froze, caught off guard. “What?”

“The man you were seeing. The one who left. What was his real name?”

“Luke. Luke Sterling. Why?”

Grandpa looked up at me with an expression I had never seen on his face in twenty-seven years. It wasn’t just shock. It was sheer, unadulterated terror mixed with profound grief.

“Oh God,” Grandpa choked out, tears suddenly welling in his eyes. “You don’t even understand what you’ve done. Why didn’t you tell me who he was?”

He pulled little Brucie closer against his chest, staring at her eye condition as if he were looking at a ghost from a past he had spent decades trying to bury.

The worst, most sickening thoughts started racing through my mind…
