Eleven years ago, I opened Rosie’s Diner in honor of my late mother. Her rule was simple: nobody leaves hungry. A charity jar beside the register helped cover meals for anyone struggling.
After opening a second location, I hired Kyle to manage the original. His financial reports looked excellent, but longtime customers stopped coming.
Then my cook, Luis, told me Kyle had removed the charity jar and was turning away people who looked poor.
To see for myself, I arrived disguised as a homeless man with four dollars and asked for soup. The hostess tried to send me away, but a waitress named Amber welcomed me to a window table and offered to pay for my meal.
Kyle stormed over, berated her, and shoved me outside. On the way out, I spotted the hostess sliding a customer’s credit card through a hidden skimming device.
I recorded what I could, called the police, and revealed who I was. Investigators uncovered stolen card details belonging to hundreds of customers. Kyle and the hostess were arrested.
But removing them wasn’t enough. I personally apologized to the victims, sold my second restaurant, and used $41,000 to reimburse their losses and bank fees.
Then I promoted Amber to general manager, put Luis in charge of the kitchen, and restored the charity jar.
Today, our regulars are returning, and anyone who needs a meal gets a warm welcome.
Rosie’s finally feels like my mother’s diner again.
