I was 27, broke, unmarried, and living above a hardware store when my brother left his six-month-old triplet daughters on my porch with one diaper bag and a note: “I’m sorry. I can’t do this.”
Their mother had died only days earlier.
I knew nothing about raising babies. My neighbor told me to call social services, and I almost did. Then the smallest girl wrapped her tiny hand around my finger.
I stayed.
For the next 22 years, I worked double shifts, packed lunches, ruined hairstyles, sat through fevers, science fairs, heartbreaks, and teenage arguments. Their biological father occasionally sent a card, once called about “reconnecting,” but never actually came back.
Still, one fear followed me everywhere: maybe someday they would wish their real father had raised them instead.
At their college graduation, that fear returned.
After all three crossed the stage, the dean announced one final presentation.
The girls came back together.
“Our father couldn’t be here today,” June said.
My stomach dropped.
Then she opened an old notebook and began reading letters I had secretly written to them when they were babies.
“I don’t know how to be a father,” one entry said. “But I know I’m not going anywhere.”
My knees hit the floor.
June looked directly at me.
“When I said our father,” she said, “I meant you.”
Then they handed me adoption papers.
“We just made the paperwork match the truth.”
For 22 years, I thought I had sacrificed my life for them.
That day, I realized they had become my life.
