Reggie Bannister Dies: ‘Phantasm’ Actor Was 80
Reggie Bannister, the actor and musician best known for portraying the fearless ice cream vendor-turned-action hero in the cult horror franchise Phantasm, has died. He was 80.
Bannister died peacefully on Sunday, August 9, at his mountain home in Crestline, California, following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His wife, Gigi Bannister, was beside him during his final days, according to a family statement.
His representative confirmed the actor’s death, saying Bannister had been receiving care at home as the effects of Parkinson’s became increasingly debilitating. His final message to his devoted fans was: “It’s never over.” People
The unlikely hero of ‘Phantasm’
Bannister became a cult-film favorite through his portrayal of Reggie, a friendly ice cream vendor who evolves into a shotgun-wielding hero battling the sinister Tall Man.
He first played the character in director Don Coscarelli’s original Phantasm, released in 1979. The surreal independent horror film, featuring mysterious silver spheres, otherworldly creatures and Angus Scrimm as the Tall Man, attracted a passionate following and eventually produced four sequels.

Career beyond the horror franchise
Although Phantasm remained his defining work, Bannister accumulated numerous acting credits during a career spanning more than four decades.
His film appearances included Kenny & Company, Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, The Demolitionist, Wishmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Mangler Reborn, The Rage, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp and Bonejangles.
He also portrayed Herb Tooklander in One for the Road, a short-film adaptation of Stephen King’s story connected to ’Salem’s Lot. Bannister helped produce the project as well, reflecting his broader involvement in independent filmmaking.
Alongside acting, Bannister worked as a producer, composer and musician. Music was an important part of his life long before he became a horror-film favorite. He performed with the Greenwood County Singers and later released several albums.
His musical abilities were also incorporated into the Phantasm films. Bannister arranged “Sittin’ Here at Midnight” with co-star Bill Thornbury for the original movie and composed “Have You Seen It” for Phantasm IV: Oblivion.
Military service and declining health
Born Reginald Horace Bannister in Long Beach, California, on September 29, 1945, Bannister served in the United States military during the Vietnam War. He later used benefits provided through the G.I. Bill to study acting.
His wife said he was exposed to Agent Orange during his military service. Bannister was diagnosed with dementia and Parkinson’s disease in 2016, and his health gradually deteriorated over the following decade. He entered home hospice care in early 2025. Entertainment Weekly
Despite his illness, Bannister remained deeply connected to the horror community. Fans rallied around him and his family during his declining health, raising money to help cover his care.

Bannister is survived by his wife, Gigi, and his daughter, Ellen. Memorial gatherings and a public celebration of his life are reportedly being planned.
Through five Phantasm movies and decades of independent filmmaking, Reggie Bannister created a character who became inseparable from the franchise itself.
