I crossed an ocean to visit my daughter in South Korea, never expecting to overhear something that would make me question her entire marriage.
While preparing dinner, I heard my son-in-law, Joon, arguing with his father in Korean.
“You know why you married her.”
Neither man knew I understood them. I’d secretly been learning Korean for nine months.
Then his father revealed Joon had been interviewing for jobs in America without telling my daughter, Emily. Worse, he suggested Emily had originally represented an escape from the life Joon’s father had planned for him.
When I confronted Joon, he admitted part of what attracted him to Emily was the freedom her life represented—but insisted he genuinely fell in love with her.
Then Emily walked in.
I told her everything.
She was furious, especially when she learned Joon had already told American employers relocation was possible without asking her.
But then I made my own mistake.
“Moving back wouldn’t exactly be terrible,” I said.
Emily stared at me.
“Both of you keep turning my life into somewhere you want me to go.”
That sentence changed everything.
I realized Joon wasn’t the only one trying to shape Emily’s future. For years, I’d secretly expected her to return home.
