For months, my eight-year-old son Ben hated wearing an eye patch for his vision problem.
“Why do I have to be the only kid with one?” he would ask.
Then suddenly, the complaints stopped.
Even stranger, our boxes of eye patches started disappearing incredibly fast.
When I asked Ben where they were going, he insisted he was “losing them.” But one morning, I found six unopened patches hidden in his backpack.
He refused to explain.
Days later, his teacher called.
“I think you need to come inside at pickup. You should see this yourself.”
I rushed to school expecting the worst.
Instead, I walked into Ben’s classroom and froze.
At least a dozen children were wearing eye patches.
Some were decorated with stars, hearts, stickers, and drawings.
Ben had been giving them away.
It started when a new girl named Sophie asked why he wore one. Ben explained that one eye needed help getting stronger.
Sophie simply said:
“If everybody wore one sometimes, you wouldn’t be the only one.”
The next day, Ben brought her an extra patch.
She wore it.
Then another child wanted one. And another.
Soon, half the class joined in.
When I asked Ben why Sophie’s kindness mattered so much, he whispered:
“She was the first person who didn’t ask what was wrong with me.”
For months, Ben had wanted his patch to disappear.
Instead, he made sure he wasn’t alone anymore.
