My seven-year-old son, Tyler, called the police because I wouldn’t let him have ice cream before dinner. I expected the officer to explain that dessert wasn’t an emergency and leave. Instead, his questions uncovered something I hadn’t realized Tyler had noticed.
Officer Bruce first made sure Tyler was safe. Then he asked why waiting for ice cream upset him so much. Tyler pointed to our Friday ice cream night on the calendar and said, “Mom never has any.” He began listing the meals where I’d given him the bigger portion and claimed I wasn’t hungry, even when my stomach growled.
Money had been tight, and I thought I’d hidden the small ways I went without so Tyler could have enough. But he had been watching. He was angry about the ice cream rule, yet he also wanted me to enjoy some with him.
Officer Bruce gently explained that calling the police to settle an argument was wrong. After dinner, Tyler and I each had a full bowl of ice cream. Later, we saved the little that remained for Friday. I wrote “MOM” on the carton, and Tyler added two words underneath: “NOT 911.”
