My five-year-old granddaughter, Margot, spent all morning asking when she could stand beside her dad and his bride, Claire, for wedding pictures.
Then I overheard Claire tell her something I’ll never forget.
“You’re not the most important girl in your dad’s life anymore. Stay out of the family photos.”
Margot quietly replied, “But I’m family.”
Later, she told me Claire was only nice to her when other people were watching.
She even had a name for her:
“Picture Claire.”
At the reception, instead of giving the speech I had prepared, I stood and told everyone exactly why Margot had been crying.
Her father, Emmett, immediately took her aside and asked what had been happening.
Margot explained that Claire played with her, fixed her hair, and acted affectionate when cameras or guests were around—but otherwise sent her away.
When Emmett confronted Claire, she admitted she felt like she was always competing with his late wife, Phoebe, Margot’s mother.
“I wanted today to look like ours,” Claire said.
Emmett replied, “Margot is ours.”
Claire answered too quickly:
“She’s yours.”
That was enough.
Emmett took his daughter’s hand and left the wedding.
Weeks later, he decided he couldn’t continue the marriage.
And Margot never again had to wonder whether she belonged in her own family.
