The Egg Count Challenge: Are There Really 16 or 18 Eggs?

Posted on October 23, 2026

Look closely at this image of a blue plate filled with eggs.

The caption at the top asks: “EYE TEST COUNT THE EGGS 16 OR 18”.

It seems like a very simple question, doesn’t it?

However, brain teasers like this are designed to trick our eyes.

Many people quickly glance at the plate and guess 16.

Others look a bit longer, count too fast, and guess 18.

But both of those common answers are actually incorrect.

Let’s slow down, examine the image together, and find the real answer.

Counting objects that are packed closely in a circle can be surprisingly tricky.

Your eyes can easily jump from one egg to another and lose track.

To find the true number, we need a smart and careful system.

The best way is to start from one spot and go in a circle, then count the ones inside.

Let’s begin with the outer ring of eggs, starting from the very top.

At the top center, we can see the first egg.

Moving clockwise to the right, we find the second egg.

Below that one is the third egg on the upper right.

Next, on the middle right, we count the fourth egg.

Continuing down, there is the fifth egg on the lower right.

Near the bottom right is the sixth egg.

At the bottom right edge sits the seventh egg.

Right at the bottom center, we find the eighth egg.

Moving to the bottom left, we can count the ninth egg.

On the lower left edge is the tenth egg.

Going up, on the middle left, is the eleventh egg.

Above that, on the upper left, we find the twelfth egg.

And just before the top, there is the thirteenth egg.

That completes the entire outer circle, giving us 13 eggs.

Now, let’s count the eggs that are nestled in the inner section.

In the upper middle area, we can see the fourteenth egg.

To the right of it, slightly lower, is the fifteenth egg.

Directly below that one, towards the center, sits the sixteenth egg.

Finally, in the lower-middle section, we find the seventeenth egg.

That is every single egg accounted for on the blue plate.

So, the trick question asks if there are 16 or 18 eggs.

But through careful, step-by-step counting, we can see the truth.

There are exactly 17 eggs on the plate!

Did you manage to count them all correctly on your first try?

It just goes to show how easily our eyes can be fooled by a simple pattern.

Share this fun test with your friends and see if they can get the right answer too!
