A Priest a Nun and a Misunderstood Scripture Reference

Posted on October 25, 2026

A priest offered a nun a lift. As she got in and crossed her legs, her gown shifted slightly, revealing part of her leg. The priest nearly swerved off the road but managed to regain control. As he steadied the car, his hand slowly moved up her leg. “Father, remember Psalm 129?” the nun said calmly. Startled, the priest pulled his hand away. But as they continued driving, temptation got the best of him, and he let his hand slide up her leg again. “Father,” the nun repeated, “remember Psalm 129?

” Flustered, the priest apologized. “I’m sorry, Sister… the flesh is weak.” When they arrived at the convent, the nun stepped out in silence. The priest, still confused and curious, rushed to his Bible when he got back to the church. He looked up Psalm 129. It read: “Go forth and seek;

further up, you will find glory.” Moral of the story: Always know your scriptures—you might miss out on a blessing because you weren’t paying attention

The joke turns on a familiar comic device: two people appear to be discussing the same thing while giving the words entirely different meanings. The nun’s repeated reference sounds like a warning, and the priest responds as though he has been reminded of a rule he should already know. His embarrassment makes the exchange seem settled before he has actually understood it.

Repetition gives the short scene its rhythm. The first reminder interrupts him. The second makes his uncertainty more obvious. By the time they reach the convent, the unexplained reference has become the central question in his mind. The journey ends, but the question follows him back to the church.

That delay is important to the punchline. If he had asked for an explanation during the drive, the story would have lost its final reversal. Instead, he waits until he can consult the passage himself. The answer he finds changes his understanding of the conversation and makes the earlier moments look different in retrospect.

Like many traditional anecdotes, the story uses a simple setting and recognizable character roles to establish expectations quickly. A car ride provides a small, enclosed scene. The convent marks the end of the shared journey. The return to the church creates the separate moment of discovery on which the ending depends.

The quoted verse belongs to the joke’s invented setup and should be understood as part of its wordplay, rather than as a reliable quotation from scripture. The humor relies on the audience accepting the reference long enough for the surprise to work. Its point is the gap between assumed knowledge and the meaning delivered by the final line.

The closing moral extends that reversal into another playful observation. The priest believes he has understood a serious reminder, only to discover that his confidence was misplaced. The reader is invited to laugh at the assumption, the delay, and the way a brief phrase can carry the whole story toward an unexpected conclusion. The misunderstanding survives because neither person pauses to ask a direct question.
