Four Short Jokes About Messages Bedtime Dentists and Hearing Aids

Posted on October 25, 2026

A mother texts her son: “What does IDK, LY, & TTYL mean?” He answers, “I don’t know, love you, and talk to you later.” She replies, “It’s okay, don’t worry. I’ll ask your sister. Love you too.” He’s translated everything correctly—and explained absolutely nothing. Another parent’s efforts go sideways at bedtime: after a father spends two hours telling stories, his wife approaches the quiet room. “Is he asleep, dear?” she whispers. “Yes, Mommy,” answers their very awake son.

Meanwhile, a mother discovers that her boy’s tooth extraction costs $100 instead of the promised $20. The dentist explains that the child yelled so loudly, four other patients fled the office. Then there’s the man proudly showing off his $3,000 hearing aid, declaring it the best he’s ever owned. His friend asks, “What kind is it?” The delighted answer: “Half past four!” In these little jokes, the explanations are often funnier than the problems.

Each joke turns on a small gap between what somebody intends to say and what somebody else hears. The mother asking about abbreviations expects definitions, but the definitions sound like an ordinary personal message. Her son’s answer is accurate in every detail. The trouble is that accuracy alone cannot tell her that he has actually answered the question. Her affectionate reply completes the misunderstanding rather than clearing it up.

The bedtime scene uses a different reversal. Two hours of storytelling suggest that the father has been patiently trying to settle his child. When the mother asks whether he is asleep, the expected answer would come from the adult. Instead, the child speaks. In a handful of words, the situation changes: the storyteller has apparently become the sleeper, while the intended listener remains awake enough to explain everything.

At the dentist’s office, the surprise comes from an unexpected way of counting the cost. The mother understands the price as payment for one extraction. The dentist’s answer shifts attention to four other appointments that disappeared when their patients heard the noise. The exaggerated bill becomes a comic calculation of the consequences of one frightened child’s very loud protest. The punchline works because it takes an ordinary disagreement about a price in a completely different direction.

The hearing aid joke sets up confidence before revealing confusion. Its owner emphasizes the price and quality of the device, inviting a question about its make or model. His friend’s simple inquiry should give him a chance to boast further. Instead, he answers with the time. The response undercuts his claim more efficiently than a long explanation could, leaving the listener to recognize the contradiction.

These are familiar situations rather than elaborate adventures: a text exchange, bedtime, a dental visit, and a conversation between friends. Their brevity gives the last line room to do the work. Little background is needed because the expectations are easy to recognize. A precise answer becomes useless, a parent falls asleep first, a bill acquires an absurd explanation, and an expensive purchase fails its owner’s demonstration. Everyday certainty lasts only until the next person speaks.
