What’s in Canned Meat? Ingredients Explained

Posted on April 5, 2026

SPAM is one of the most iconic pantry staples, often found in kitchens—especially at grandma’s house. First introduced by Hormel Foods in 1937, SPAM quickly became popular during World War II, when food shortages and rationing made long-lasting, affordable products essential.

The origin of the name “SPAM” has been widely debated. Some people believe it stands for “Specially Processed American Meat,” while others say it means “Shoulder of Pork and Ham.” However, the most accepted explanation is that it’s a combination of “spiced ham.” The name was reportedly created by Ken Daigneau, who won a naming contest organized by Hormel in 1937.

Despite the mystery behind its name, SPAM’s ingredients are simple. According to Hormel, it contains pork, water, salt, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrate. The production process involves mixing ground pork and ham with these ingredients, sealing the mixture in cans, cooking it, and then cooling it for several hours.

SPAM became especially important during the Great Depression and continued to be widely used throughout World War II. Even today, it remains popular because of its long shelf life, affordability, and versatility. Love it or hate it, SPAM has undoubtedly made a lasting impact on food culture around the world.
