My fists clenched, and I could barely breathe.
“So you changed my reservation without telling me?” I asked.
My sister looked away.
“We thought you’d understand. You’ve been through enough. We wanted to protect you from making a scene.”
“Protect me?” I whispered. “You took the one thing I had left and decided what I was allowed to do with it.”
Nobody answered.
I looked at the expensive luggage beside me and suddenly realized something. The vacation had never been about helping me heal.
They had simply wanted me out of the way.
I pulled out my phone and checked the reservation details. Everything had been changed that morning.
Then I noticed something strange.
The hotel had received a new payment card for the reservation.
My husband’s card.
My heart stopped.
My husband had walked out after my miscarriage. He hadn’t called. He hadn’t asked how I was doing.
So why was he suddenly involved in my vacation?
I turned to my sister.
“Tell me the truth. What did he pay for?”
Her face went pale.
And then she finally admitted:
“He called us last week. He said he wanted to make sure you never came back home.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
Then my phone rang.
It was my husband.
For months, I had begged him for one conversation.
Now, when I least expected it, he was calling.
I answered.
His voice was cold.
“Where are you?”
I looked at my sister, then at the hotel receptionist.
And for the first time since losing my baby, I felt something other than grief.
I felt strength.
“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” I said.
Then I hung up.
I picked up my suitcase and walked toward the elevator.
I didn’t know where I would sleep that night.
But I knew one thing:
I would never again let someone else decide what my life was worth.
