Every family wanted four-year-old Josie—until they learned adopting her meant taking her 16-year-old brother, Jace, too. My husband and I said yes to both.
When they moved in, Josie slowly began calling our house “home.” Jace was different. He was polite and quiet, but after a week I noticed something strange: he still hadn’t unpacked. His clothes remained inside two duffel bags, as if he expected to leave at any moment.
A month later, their former foster mother called and asked, “They still haven’t told you why they picked you?”
We learned Jace had specifically requested our family—but only because Josie had chosen us first.
When we asked why, Josie gave the simplest answer: we had talked to Jace.
Other families played with her and offered her snacks, but they spoke ABOUT her brother instead of TO him. They asked whether he was difficult or whether he could live somewhere else.
Josie didn’t care anymore who wanted her.
She wanted someone who wanted Jace too.
Then I asked Jace why he still hadn’t unpacked.
“Because people change their minds,” he admitted.
A week later, I passed his bedroom and stopped.
The duffel bags were empty.
For anyone else, it looked like a messy teenager’s room.
To me, it looked like he finally believed he was home.
