Six weeks before our daughter was born, my husband Eric left me for another woman and emptied our savings account. Then our baby arrived early and needed expensive breathing treatments.
Desperate, I called him.
“She needs her father,” I said.
Eric laughed. “You wanted the baby. She’s your problem.”
I even drove to his house, hoping seeing his newborn daughter might change him. Instead, his girlfriend mocked me while Eric told me to stop asking for money.
That night, I finally called his mother, Barbara.
She had always been difficult with me, and I assumed she would defend him. But after hearing everything, she went silent.
Then she said, “He told me YOU left him.”
The next morning, Barbara showed up with a plan.
First, she returned every box of Eric’s belongings she had stored for years. Then she revealed something his girlfriend didn’t know: the house Eric claimed to own actually belonged to Barbara, and he had been paying reduced family rent.
That arrangement was ending.
But Barbara didn’t stop there. She paid for the baby’s medicine, helped me organize financial records, and arranged a consultation with a family lawyer.
Months later, Eric finally began making support payments and showing up for his daughter.
Barbara looked at me one evening and admitted:
“I spent years wondering if you were good enough for my son. Now I wonder if he was ever good enough for you.”
