For four months, my brother-in-law Gary dumped grass, leaves, and branches over our shared fence into my garden. I asked him three times to stop, but he always dismissed me.
One morning, while bagging another pile of rotting grass, I found a plant tag labeled “Golden Celebration Rose.” Gary didn’t grow roses, so I searched online and discovered his weekend landscaping business.
His advertisements promised customers “cleanup and haul-away included.” Then I found a photo of him working beside the same yellow roses.
Gary was charging customers to remove their waste, then dumping it in my garden to avoid disposal fees.
That Saturday, I caught him carrying another bag toward my fence. At that exact moment, one of his customers, Mike, arrived and recognized his rose branches in my garden.
Mike had paid Gary an extra $60 to haul them away.
I returned six bags of rotting waste to Gary’s yard while Mike exposed the scheme in our neighborhood group. Several customers demanded refunds and canceled future jobs.
Gary finally took everything to the disposal site and paid the fee himself.
Weeks later, he complained that I should have told him I was serious.
“I told you three times,” I replied.
Gary had always understood my boundary—he simply believed ignoring it was cheaper than respecting it. Once it started costing him money, nothing ever came over my fence again.
