Which is Correct?

Posted on October 21, 2026

Let’s talk about safely towing a trailer with a car.

This is a very important topic.

It is about physics and balance.

The key idea is called “tongue weight.”

The tongue weight is the downward force that the trailer’s coupling puts on the car’s hitch.

Having the correct tongue weight is critical for safe driving.

If the tongue weight is not correct, the whole system can become unstable.

The weight of the car and the trailer are balanced around their respective axles.

For the trailer, the main balance point is its own axle and wheels.

Let’s look at the position of the heavy box in the trailer in the image.

The box represents the main load, which concentrates most of the weight.

Its position matters a lot.

The best and safest position is to place the main weight in the center of the trailer, right over the axle.

When the heavy weight is over the trailer’s axle, it is fully supported by the trailer’s wheels.

This is the central point.

It doesn’t tip the front up or the back up.

This creates the ideal amount of tongue weight.

It provides a stable connection, but not too much force.

This is represented in option B.

In option B, the car and trailer look flat and level.

This is the correct and safe configuration.

Now, let’s look at the incorrect options.

Option A shows the box at the front of the trailer.

This means the heavy weight is directly pressing down on the car’s hitch.

This creates too much tongue weight.

Look at the image of the car in A.

The front of the car is tilted up.

The rear of the car is pushed down.

This lifts the front wheels off the road.

This is very dangerous because it reduces steering control and braking efficiency.

Option C shows the box at the very back of the trailer.

This means the weight is far behind the trailer’s axle.

It acts like a seesaw.

The heavy weight in the back pulls the front of the trailer up.

This reduces the tongue weight.

Look at the car in C.

The rear of the car is pulled up.

The front of the car is pushed down.

This causes loss of traction on the driving wheels in front.

Also, it makes the trailer prone to dangerous swaying or “fishtailing.”

This is why centering the load over the axle is essential.

It creates stability for both the car and the trailer.

Therefore, looking at the configurations and their physical results on the vehicles…

The balanced and safe configuration…

The correct answer is B.
