Stop cheating, Johnny!

Posted on November 1, 2026

One day in class, Mr. Johnson pulled Johnny over to his desk after a test and said, “Johnny, I have a feeling that you have been cheating in your tests.”

Johnny was astounded and asked Mr. Johnson to prove it.

“Well,” said Mr. Johnson, “I was looking over your test. The question was ‘Who was our first president?’, and the little girl who sits next to you, Mary, put ‘George Washington’ and so did you.”

“So, everyone knows that he was the first president.”

“Well, just wait a minute,” said Mr. Johnson. “The next question was, ‘Who freed the slaves?’ Mary put ‘Abraham Lincoln’ and so did you.”

“Well, I read the history book last night and I remembered that,” said Johnny.

“Wait, wait,” said Mr. Johnson. “The next question was, ‘Who was the president during the Louisiana Purchase?’ Mary put ‘I don’t know’ and you put ‘Me neither’.”

Little Johnny was at the mall with his mother when a man came walking toward them.
Little Johnny hopped up and down, laughed, pointed, and screamed, “Mommy! Look at that bowlegged man!”

His mother was so embarrassed. “Johnny, your manners are atrocious! You need some culture, young man!”

For the next month Little Johnny was forced to read Shakespeare every night. When his detention was finally over, she again took him to the same mall and sure enough, the same bowlegged man came walking toward them.

Had Little Johnny learned anything from the great bard? Yes.

This time, as the man approached, Little Johnny cried out, “Hark! What manner of man is this me sees, who wears his balls in parentheses?”

So one day, Grandma sent her grandson Little Johnny down to the waterhole to get some water for cooking dinner.
As he was dipping the bucket in, he saw two big eyes looking back at him.

He dropped the bucket and hightailed it for Grandma’s kitchen.

“Well now, where’s my bucket and where’s my water?” Grandma asked him.

“I can’t get any water from that water hole, Grandma” exclaimed Johnny. “There’s a BIG ol’ alligator down there!”

“Now don’t you mind that ol’ alligator, Johnny. He’s been there for a few years now, and he’s never hurt no one. Why, he’s probably as scared of you as you are of him!”

“Well, Grandma,” replied Johnny, “if he’s as scared of me as I am of him, then that water ain’t fit to drink!”

  • I decided to surprise my husband by bringing lunch to his hospital. But when one of his closest coworkers saw me standing there with a bag of food, the look on his face immediately changed. He glanced at the bag, then at me, before asking quietly, “Wait… Lucas hasn’t told you?” Lucas and I had been married for 11 years. Being the wife of a trauma surgeon meant understanding that emergencies could happen at any hour, and I’d spent most of our marriage trying to accept that. I admired my husband for helping people through some of the worst moments of their lives. Still, I couldn’t help wishing he had more time for his own family. During the past year, things had become especially difficult. Our 8-year-old daughter, Emma, and I had gotten used to eating dinner without him. Most evenings, I put his portion away before we even sat down at the table. He had missed Thanksgiving, our wedding anniversary, and even Emma’s birthday celebration. There were also nights when he didn’t come home at all. Whenever I asked what was happening, his answers were always similar. “We don’t have enough doctors tonight, Nat.” “Something came up during surgery.” “Don’t stay awake waiting for me, okay?” I sometimes wanted to tell him how lonely our home had become. But whenever he finally returned, he looked completely drained, and I couldn’t bring myself to start an argument. One night, I woke up around 3 a.m. and noticed Lucas sitting on the edge of our mattress. His elbows rested on his knees, and both hands covered his face. “Lucas? Honey, what’s wrong?” He quickly rubbed his eyes before turning toward me. “Nothing. It’s just been a really hard shift.” I moved closer. “Do you want to tell me about it? You know you can talk to me.” He gave me a weak smile. “I’m okay, Nat. Get some sleep.” Before I could say anything else, he lay down and rolled onto his side, facing away from me. I stayed awake for a while, wondering what was weighing so heavily on him. The following Tuesday, Lucas left for work looking just as tired as he had the night before. Watching him drive away, I decided I wanted to do something thoughtful for him. I prepared his favorite sandwich, added a generous slice of homemade apple pie, and placed everything in a paper lunch bag. Then I wrote a little message and tucked it inside. “You spend every day looking after other people. Please let me look after you sometimes, too.” I hoped the surprise might brighten his day. During the drive to the hospital, I imagined finding him between patients and sitting together for a few peaceful minutes. It had been so long since we’d enjoyed a conversation without someone calling his phone or rushing him back to work. I wanted to ask how he was really doing and, for once, have enough time to listen. When I reached the hospital, I headed toward the nurses’ station, hoping someone could tell me where Lucas was. That’s when I recognized Adrian, one of his closest colleagues. Adrian wasn’t a stranger to our family. He had visited our home several times and had even attended Emma’s birthday parties. “Adrian! Hi!” I called, walking toward him. He turned around, and I smiled as I lifted the lunch bag. “I thought I’d surprise Lucas with something homemade. Do you know where I can find him?” Adrian stopped walking. For a moment, he said absolutely nothing. His eyes moved toward the bag in my hand, then slowly returned to my face. The friendly greeting I’d expected never came. “Adrian?” I asked. “Is something wrong?” He glanced over his shoulder toward the hallway, looking as though he was trying to decide what to say. A terrible feeling began to settle in my stomach. I gripped the handles of the paper bag more tightly. “Please, just tell me. Is Lucas all right? Did something happen?” Adrian looked at me again, his expression growing even more uncomfortable. Then he lowered his voice and asked, “Lucas hasn’t told you?” Continue reading in the first comment… See less Comments
